Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP

What is NLP

It stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is a therapeutic technique to detect and re-programme unconscious patterns of thought and behaviour in order to alter psychological responses. The basic principle of NLP is that it is within an individual`s power to change their own subconscious programming for the better.

What does an NLP Practitioner Coach Do?

As with any coach, our objective is to find to help you achieve your full potential, whatever that may be. We ask questions to find out what it is you really want and why; what it will give you and what it is that is stopping you. This will also bring up questions as to what resources you will need to achieve what you want; this is not usually material resources, but resources of feelings. With all this information gathered in the initial consultation, some NLP exercises will follow.

A coaching session will usually last two hours, and you will leave with a couple of tools to practice with until your next session. The more you practice the more progress you will make.

Who are you, and why do you behave the way you do?

You are the sum of all your experiences, whatever they may be, good or bad; recent, ancient or forgotten altogether. Some people may have had similar experiences to you, even at the same age as you and yet somehow you have moved on where they have not or vice-versa. Why the difference? When two or more people share an experience or event, they will each make it mean something different and that fits perfectly within their “map of the world”. Each one of us has our own map of the world based on our experiences to date. Can we change what has happened in the past? No. Can we change how we interpret the past and what we make those past events mean to us? Yes!

This is the key to NLP coaching. No matter what our past experiences have been and what we made them mean to us at the time, we can revisit them today in a safe and controlled environment and change how we feel about them.

Feeling anxious about exams, interviews, leaving the house or have a phobia?

NLP can help with some very effective tools that can be built in and used at a moment’s notice. I myself used a technique in my final osteopathic exams when presenting a case to an examiner. Mid-way through my presentation I dried up completely and my mind went blank. Under the table I tapped my thumb and finger together repeatedly. Instantly, I really do mean instantly, my state of mind went from sheer terror to absolute joy. I had a smile on my face, I felt tremendous and my body was super-charged with energy. All this in the space of just a few seconds, after that I carried straight on with my presentation (and passed!!). That is the beauty and power of NLP.
